PRESS RELEASE

2022 National Cooperative Business Congress

Cooperative Enterprises: The Catalysts for Socio-Economic Development”

Amidst all uncertainties, coops can fill in the gap.

Cooperatives – both as a movement and as enterprising entities – can assist in addressing the pressing problems that our country faces today.

For food security, cooperatives can reach marginalized sectors and provide food and products that are affordable, safe, and nutritious. At the same time, agri-marketing-consumer coops are a sustainable and resilient source of produce. For the health sector, cooperatives offer Medical Mission Groups, and coop-funded and managed hospitals to provide affordable and holistic medical services reaching out to rural and vulnerable areas. We also have cooperative health insurance systems that can lessen [the] medical costs. Meanwhile, transport service cooperatives offer discounted services to areas where public transportation is limited, if not heavily burdened. Last but not the least, we have electric cooperatives who [had] been servicing rural areas not prioritized by electric corporations.

The cooperative sector, as a socially enterprising entity, should be distinctly considered as a major economic unit capable of social change in the Philippine Development Plan. This also rhymes with the calls to mainstream cooperatives, their products and services, and their ideals.

Countries abroad had already pushed for the mainstreaming of the cooperative sector: Migros (Switzerland), Mondragon (Spain), ANGKASA (Malaysian government-supported apex organization), and the supported and favored CO-OP products in Singapore and Thailand.

The promotion of financial programs and services of cooperatives, as A possible recourse in the crises of the country, is the main rationale for the Philippine Cooperative Center’s 2022 National Cooperative Business Congress, to be held this coming November 28-29 at the NOVADECI Convention Center in Novaliches, Quezon City.

The Business Congress is also an opportunity for cooperatives and other enterprising entities to strengthen their relationships, membership, and possible pooling of resources for societal development.

Representatives of the sector in the congress, Cong. Nicanor Briones, and Cong. Filmon Espares, and other legislative allies will be attending the congress together with Usec. Joseph Encabo, the chairperson of the Cooperative Development Authority. Aside from the plenary discussions, there will be a trade fair where cooperatives and other businesses will showcase their products and services.
