All throughout the past year and extending until now, our frontliners kept our society running. They have all been risking life and limb to earn, and prosper on one hand, and to serve on the other hand.
It is not a secret that the labor and cooperative sector has long been fighting for the same rights in the civic and political space. Thus, the Philippine Cooperative Sector celebrates “Manggagawang Pilipino”, in recognition of their service and hard work.
Our solidarity with the labor sector does not end with congratulatory remarks and salutations. Part of today’s celebration is the recognition of the current plight of our workforce amidst the “new normal”.
Some of us may feel safe in the confines of our homes – tenure secured and careers developed. However, the majority of the labor sector has taken a big slump. Various industries such as transportation, construction, tourism, wholesale and retail trade suffered massive job losses and unemployment, more than what was projected. Many small to medium enterprises closed down, laying off thousands if not millions of service workers. Abroad, OFWs also lost their jobs and returned home dispossessed and uncertain about their future. While many others may have kept their frontline jobs, they are regularly exposed to the dreaded Corona virus.
But they are – and we all are – moving forward in this fight.
May the cooperative sector be a safe space for our laborers and workers. May the cooperative sector be a viable venue for professional career and personal growth. No matter how small, we can support each other.
To all of our workers, to all our frontliners – from our nurses and other health workers, to our jeepney drivers, workers in essential industries and delivery personnel– we salute you. Rest assured, we are together in this fight.
